Corn Sprout Root Hairs
Maybe not the best photo on the planet but I was trying to capture all the activity happening around my corn seed (that pink thing at the top). Even with only a 1/4" up-sprout, there is a tremendously long main root supported by a significant network of white fibers (root hairs and/or fungi). I'll have to dig up some of my neighbor's seed to confirm but I think this is a great testament to our biological "starter fertilizer." This corn is off to a great start.
Neighbor's Corn Sprouts
Curiosity got the better of me so I went across the road to dig up some of the neighbor's corn seed for root inspection. This corn was nearly emerged when I dug it up so a couple days more mature than mine. I felt the roots were very similar to mine on length and mass. The part that was missing was the white fuzzy stuff on the roots (root hairs and fungi). An interesting comparison.
